View Full Version : My Nem/Clown Story

My pair finally hosted my anemone last night! I am so excited! I have been waiting on and off for about 6 months now. Long story short, I had a bout of ich in the tanks and left it fallow for two months. While the pair was in QT I got them to host a plastic food dish that you would use to feed your cats. They have been back in the display for about 3 weeks now ignoring the anemone. I slowly inched the plastic dish closer to the anemone until it was touching it. They still ignored it. Well, yesterday I found my male in it. About 2 hours later the female finally joined in. It is quite a site! It is like someone flipped a switch. They are full of energy and loving it. What used to be a pair of shy, timmid fish are now bulldogs not afraid of anything.

I think I can tell this without getting too chastised at this point. I DON'T recommend this to anyone as I was going through about 50 gallons a week to keep the water parameters in check. But here is my NEM picture story.

I picked up thes nem at about the 3 month mark. I knew better but I couldn't resist. I am not sure if it was so bleached when I got it that it took so long to get used to my lights or if my water parameters were so bad that it hid in the rocks for so long. In any case, it was in the rocks for 8-10 weeks if my memory serves me right and accepted very few pieces of silversides. It then started moving out in the open. About 1/2" a week. It is now fully out front and center in my tank attached to the bottom of my aquarium. I can look underneeth the tank and see the foot. It is a 3-4" sand bed. Anyway, here is what it looked like when I got it.

Here is the food dish that I got my clowns to host while in QT. It was the smallest "cat" dish I could find. I cut it in half, modified the top half, and superglued it together. The clowns hosted it from day one. I guess they felt protected in it.

This is a picture from today. The nem was extremely deflated when I got home. Notice the difference between the pictures. I am not sure if they are beating it to death or if it is going through its normal cycle. It is usually deflated in the morning when I get up. But today it was defalted when I got home.

The nem is inflating again and the clowns are hidden within it tonight. My guess is that it is healthy enough to take the beating.

Great pictures! It doesn't matter how many times I see it........watching little clowns cuddling the crap out of an anemone...or frogspawn...or an open brain...always puts me in awe. I can sit and watch it all day long. My last few clowns didn't care about the nem....they wanted to host corals. It's just as well...I could ever get an anemone to stay still. Maybe I'll give it another go.....

remember the anemone will deflate when expelling waste. This is common, my bta's do it about every other day.
