love the cave on the left... the right eh i like stuff looking natural but neat design

09-16-2010, 08:57 AM
Yup, how stable is that bonsaii piece. Looks good so far?

09-16-2010, 06:04 PM
It is very stable. I used a morter mix that Marco Rock sold with it. I was actually very surprised how easy it was to use, and how fast it set.

09-18-2010, 01:16 PM
After 6 days. I have been feeding tank with frozen foods, and flakes. I also added start smart, and a biological sponge from my nano.

Its been 1month 12 days so far. I have just finished the plumbing in the tank. I only had 2 leaks in the system. I fixed one and the other was the ring on the mag 12. I pulled the front cover off of it and broke the shaft. So now Im waiting a couple more days to get that back in and the system Running correctly. Also coming next week is my Asm G1x.

Ill post a fts when I get all the equipment out of the tank. Hopefully a couple days. Thanks for looking.

P.s - Feeback is appreciated.

10-25-2010, 12:18 PM

10-25-2010, 05:12 PM

Purely out of curiosity, why'd you use 45's instead of 90's on your return?

10-30-2010, 12:06 PM
Less flow restriction then a 90.

10-31-2010, 02:27 PM
Thanks. Im happy with what I got and what I spent. Im going to give these a little time to settle in and move them for placement. I just really hope the Monti doesn't die on me. If anyone has monti care guides please let me know. I know common stuff but anything you can throw at me is appreciated. I really wish I got the first one they had for auction it didnt look bleached.

11-05-2010, 07:20 PM
I picked these guys up at our last frag meet and didn't post them with the frags. They are just lovely. I am very glad I picked them up from John.

11-06-2010, 11:58 AM
The reason I asked about the 45's is cause I've worked with plumbers with 30+ years of experience that have never been able to wrap their head around that. I'm pretty critical of plumbing and I like your setup. Nicely Done. The clowns are beautiful, I'm going to pick up a couple from Jon, after I get an anemone and let it get settled. The frags are gorgeous too!

11-06-2010, 01:53 PM
Thanks for the kind words. I want to get an anemone as well for these guys. They love that rock area and im sure they would love to hang out in a anemone over there.

11-08-2010, 09:47 AM
looking very very very nice i love the haning rock even tho its not natural but it looks good and creative.

Just input on the current tank parms.

Salinity: 1.026
Ammonia/NH4: O ppm
Calcium/CA2: 460ppm
KH: 18dkh (High) Dosed Calcium in hopes to help. Using salifert test. It states at levels higher then 11dkh the accuracy goes off over a value of .3
NO3: 0 ppm
PO4: 0ppm

Ill post some updated pictures, just need some batteries for camera.

01-30-2011, 05:22 PM
Hey...nice setup...

I wanted to send some advice...careful on placement of corals...

The encrusting monti's will take over branching sps and they take up real-estate fast!
I would put them low if you still have good light or somewhere where they will grow and not touch the branching SPS. I made this mistake when I started.

Mushrooms I would keep out of the way too as they can kill sps in the spots where they touch and they are practically impossible to kill or remove from a rock as they will just grow back over and over again lol...

02-06-2011, 04:15 AM
Tank as of January 2011. Its a crappy picture but most recent. I will take better pictures and have up in a couple days. Any suggestions on the tank, rock, power-heads, or anything please let me know. I will also be putting up comparisons of coral from when first placed in tank. Just need to get batteries for camera....

02-13-2011, 01:13 AM
I just bought an Emperor Angel and a RBTA. Ill post pics asap.

02-13-2011, 01:32 AM
This is night shots of the Emperor and my cleaner shrimp. Ill post better pics later when the RBTA is open and looks good its not looking good as we had to peel it off a rock. You can also see my lawnmower blenny in there a little.

02-28-2011, 10:38 PM
These are some tank pictures as of February 28th 2011.

I am very happy today as my Ocellaris's have finally taken notice to my Rose Anemone. Took about 2 weeks for the Rose Anemone to find a suitable spot to stay and I'm happy with its position and can't wait for it to grow out.

03-01-2011, 11:19 AM
I love the aquascape. GREAT job!!!!!!!!!!!!!

03-01-2011, 11:23 AM
also bueatiful fish, I just put a flame angel in my tank and chose it over the emperor due the fact the flame is a dwarf and the emperor is not. Any issues with nipping with the emperor? My flame does nip alittle on my sps I think just my superman monti and forestfire digi(im assumign its due to colors, but leaves everything else alone)

03-01-2011, 06:32 PM
Thanks, I have been getting mixed feelings on the aquascape. I like it 8-) .

I haven't noticed him picking at any corals. I feed my fish twice daily till they are full maybe this helps. However, I haven't really had him long enough to conclude on that statement.

03-05-2011, 01:38 AM
Emperor Angel is in Quarantine. I am upset with this. I hope he comes threw he has been in for 4 days now. ( Ick probs )

03-05-2011, 10:52 AM
what are you using to treat him?

03-05-2011, 02:47 PM
He is in a 10gallon tank with air stone and heater. I am using Furan-2.

http://www.marinedepot.com/Aquarium_Pharmaceuticals_Furan_2_Medication_10ct_P owder_Packets_Saltwater_Bacterial_Fungal_Medicatio ns-Aquarium_Pharmaceuticals_API_MARS_Fishcare-AP1831-FIMEBF-vi.html

03-05-2011, 08:34 PM
the description on that product doesn't say it cures Ich. Is there other information it doesn't say about it that provides for Ich treatment? I was under the impression that only Hypo-salinity and copper could treat ich.

03-05-2011, 10:35 PM
Ya, I doesn't say anything on it about ich. However, the persons at my local fish store suggested that I try it as that's what they used on all their fish problems.... I wasn't going to listen to them but wanted to try something and not do nothing. I will be going back in to get the other item I was going to get.

03-06-2011, 02:18 PM

03-08-2011, 06:56 PM
No one has any idea what the Emperor may have?

03-08-2011, 07:45 PM
hop on the reefcentral IRC chat and ask fishinchick. I believe she's also lives here in Orlando, but she had a few links yesterday she gave to another member on diagnosis and treatment for something similar to this.

Worth a shot.

03-11-2011, 10:13 PM
Flukes or Lymphocystis, I think. I can't see very well. If it's flukes, as long as you have cleaner shrimp and/or some neon gobies he should be fine, after a while they will get eaten. According to Wikipedia, if it'sLymphocystis, the fish starts growing small white pin-***** like growths on their scales or skin and this is often mistaken for Ich/Ick in the early stages. It soon clumps together to form a cauliflower-like growth on the skin, fins, and occasionally gills. There is no known treatment for this virus, though some aquarists recommend surgery to remove the affected area if it is very serious. Eventually the growths inhibit the fish's ability to swim, breathe or eat, and secondary bacterial infections usually kill the fish. Usually the best cure is to simply give the fish a stress free life, a weekly bacteria treatment and the virus will slowly subside and the fins will repair themselves. This can take many months. Stress Free living for that fish means a really big tank.

Mostly Rock
03-11-2011, 10:15 PM
wow, the language filter is really sensitive! I was using the literary definition, not the modern urban slang version, I promise!

03-12-2011, 12:16 AM
Its only been about 3 weeks sense I first got him. So I am thinking all the stress and that of the new move is what has gotten to him. I Quarantined him with the furan for a week and put him back. I hope he will be happy and stress free in the set up that I have now. I feed my fish 2-3 times a day with different kinds of foods. I can only hope. I don't want to hurt/kill any fish as I did this in my first years of fish keeping and I didn't like it. I will try everything I can to help him.

On another note I just got my new moon lights in for the tank and new Ushio 14k bulbs for the tank. I am also putting 2 t5 bulbs for supplement. I will be getting a chiller in the next week or two as well to help the tank.

Ill post pictures on any updates.

Thanks for looking and as all ways any input or suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

03-12-2011, 11:18 PM
New moonlights came in. They have a dim-able switch on them so you can increase and decrease the illumination.

03-13-2011, 04:15 AM
How is the illumination at night with those? Is it bright or is that your white balance in the camera?

03-13-2011, 03:59 PM
They are that bright, also my camera doesn't help the picture out any. I haven't figured out how to take good tank shots with my camera yet...

They are dimable like I said before. What I have been doing is having them on full strength when the halides go out and reducing it as the night goes on. I will have a better setup when I get my T5s and new bulbs in.

03-13-2011, 04:01 PM
24 pieces 5mm 6000mcd wide angle super bright,470nm wavelength, extremely close to the natural moon light. The other spec that affects the moonlighting effect and people are not aware of is the angle that the light covers.

03-27-2011, 01:10 PM
So I figured I would put up some Front Tank Shot comparisons. The following will be 2 weeks, 2 months, 5 months and 7 months ( the latest ). I will put together some comparisons of my corals.

2 Weeks

2 Months

5 Months

7 Months

04-02-2011, 12:41 PM
I received these 2 pieces from a guy named Andy from reefcentral. I bought a pair of lights off him and received these as well. I am also going to be getting a forest fire, and sunset frag from him soon. I told him about Orca I hope he joins us. Also don't worry about the closeness of the frags as this isn't its final position in tank.

Pacific East Aquaculture Lemonade Pocillopora

Seasons Greetings Montipora

04-02-2011, 03:32 PM
Beautiful Pocillopora!

04-05-2011, 08:31 PM
Just so no one thinks. I am not keeping my montis close to my branching corals. They were places in their spots to get used to lighting. However, I just moved my Rainbow Monti and it did have a little left on the rock. We will see what happens to this. I am going to have fun finding spots for 2 more encrustings im getting.

04-05-2011, 09:15 PM
are you running any GFO reactors?

04-05-2011, 09:22 PM
I have been running PhosGuard in a reactor for about a week or so. However, I need to purchase some new test kits for phosphate to watch the levels. May I ask why you asked? Thanks

04-16-2011, 05:19 PM
Doing some plumbing for the chiller. Oh, what fun this is doing yourself.....

04-23-2011, 01:11 PM
While at our last meeting (Swap Meet) I picked up some cool stuff. I picked up this Flame Angel, 2 MP40w's and a Aquacontroller. I also picked up a couple more frags from a nice guy named Andy.

can we get a FTS? corals are looking good.

04-23-2011, 06:23 PM
Sure thing. Here is my FTS and side shots. The tank is about 7 months old now.

04-25-2011, 08:14 PM
Better shots at night of coral. I just tried with flash and my new box Mac gave me. They look interesting to me.

First view with the Vortech mp40's going. You can see sand on the rock as my diamond goby tears my 7month old sandbed up. Hopefully will clear up and settle down.

04-28-2011, 09:12 AM
nice tank, love the aquascaping.

05-01-2011, 12:43 AM
Thanks, would look even nicer if it was a bigger tank. :p

nice tank, love the aquascaping.

05-02-2011, 07:52 PM
The tank looks great!

05-08-2011, 09:14 PM
I received runner up for aquascapping from Marco rock for their contest on reefcentral. They had some awesome entries so I feel honored they had a honorable mention of my tank.

05-08-2011, 09:25 PM

05-08-2011, 10:54 PM
looks great

05-08-2011, 11:04 PM
Will take some years to grow in, will look great then. :p

05-15-2011, 12:53 AM
First day with fully operating AquaController controlling whole system. I must say I love it.

Bought a CPR overflow, and found out that the width of the unit is 1.5inchs more then what I have behind tank.........

05-22-2011, 07:15 PM
I have to thank Steve for the idea on how to move my tank. I used a car jack and moved it about an inch from the wall. I did tweak the stand doing so however. Hopefully, it will be fine.

05-29-2011, 09:31 PM

Side Shot

You can see the torch coral Saltwater gave me.

05-30-2011, 01:12 AM
very nice phil, it looks like its in a shadow, I think it might need a little more light. :P

05-30-2011, 11:40 AM
Possibly, I have to move him around a little more to see where it likes. I don't have many spots to pick from either lol

Thanks for the advice

05-30-2011, 04:27 PM
phil the tank is looking great bro, let us see some close up shots.

P.S. how is the coral you saved doing?
P.S.S. That torch will turn bright green with a little more light

06-05-2011, 10:58 AM
My female clown jumped boat. :(

I guess I have to put a top on the tank instead of the free hanging fixture.

08-03-2011, 06:43 PM
Been about two months sense my last post. Nothing has really changed sense then. I did remove the two overflow boxes and went with a single cpr overflow for more room in tank and better flow. I used to have my mag 12 half throttle in the tank. I can have it open all the way now.

My Emperor Angel is starting to morph. He is getting yellow along his bank. I will attach a picture, a little hard to see as he doesn't like when I get close with the camera lol

He has been munching on my Ora Chip Acro lately, and seems to only be picking at that. So its all his if he wants it :p

09-20-2011, 06:01 PM
These are just some random pics from top down. I just thought some would be nice updates.

First is the Ora Birdsnest.

Great looking tank. FYI, I don't know if people know this but Lowes and HD sells flexible PVC in 1/2 - 3/4 - 1 inch thickness. Its a great saver for not having to use 90's or 45's.

Keep up the good work!!!

09-24-2011, 05:29 PM
Thanks bluereef.

09-25-2011, 12:41 PM
So I just measured my tank with our Quantum meter. The tank goes from :

1250 Under MH's
350 1'' under water
280 6'' under
190 9'' under
150-170 on misc spots sandbed

Thanks to this I actually moved my frag rack that was in 100par to a spot with 270 for growth and color. :)

I was wondering what pocillipora like their par around does anyone know?

My rainbow monti, purple slimmer, blue milli, and forest fire were @ 280

11-03-2011, 01:23 PM

Your tank looks great! I love how you did your rock formation.

I'm curious though... The wet/dry sump; isn't that more-so for fish only tanks? I was told it becomes a breeding ground for nitrates after while?

11-03-2011, 05:58 PM
Yes, that is true. I have to vacuum it out every now and then to get the built up sediment out of the sump. I wouldn't say its for Fish only. It more of another way to have a biological filter in the system. That is my thoughts. However, I am sure there are other people that would do it other ways. I just didn't feel like doing a Diy at the time of setup. There are many many things that I would upgrade in this setup and that would be one of them. However, it isn't on top of the list.

Thanks for your comment, and look forward to chatting with you more.

01-07-2012, 10:27 AM

01-07-2012, 10:31 AM
While I was gone on vacation my RBTA finally passed. It wasn't looking good for the last couple of months. I am not really sure why it died. It was close to 200 par rating with 14k ushio's, I feed it every couple of days a silver side. My clown fish loved to swim in it. I don't know if this was the problem sense it was a small anemone or what.

Also my flame angel abandoned ship. I need to get a cover on this tank asap. I am waiting to get my Led's for the tank then probably put a canopy on top of it with them in it. I just don't know how they will mount in it.

01-22-2012, 04:38 PM
So, the baby Nassarius snails have hatched. I didn't think they did sense I didn't see them on the glass after a week. I noticed them today when cleaning the tank. Look at the sand :)

Also heres a video of my tank. Bad quality however :(

Purple Bonsai , This was sold to me as a Purple Bonsai. However, when you look at the pictures of them on internet they all have green polyps. Mine are brownish to purple, to white. If you think you might know what its true id is please let me know.

Phyto farm up 1-28-12

03-13-2012, 08:57 PM
Dismantled the rock on left side with the green star poly on it. Removed the rock broke off the Purple Bonsai and put back in with a new rock. It was hitting the sps and killing it where it touched it. So, its gone now

One bonus is I got about 4 pieces of rock that have some growth of it on it so I am kind happy I did it :)

03-25-2012, 06:24 PM

04-29-2012, 09:56 PM
Very nice set up. I love the Armor of Gods. My favorite. The bonsai tree aquascape is cool too. Check out the link for bonsai tree aquascape on a larger scale.

04-29-2012, 10:18 PM
Thanks Nitr8 . Ya that is a nice lil setup that guy has there.

04-29-2012, 10:20 PM
Hopefully mine may some day grow in like that lol

Thanks :)

08-19-2012, 10:51 PM

09-30-2012, 04:48 PM

02-04-2013, 10:14 AM
So after much thought. I'm going with two vega led's for the tank.

Stay tuned for update.

02-04-2013, 11:13 AM
Nice to hear phil, I will let you be the guinea pig plz let me know how are they. I want to get them but im thinking about the vertec lights. But if the vegas do the same job I rather spend $1000 less

02-04-2013, 12:08 PM
I've looked at the par distribution of the vega's vs the vertex. They are just about the same.

02-04-2013, 07:49 PM

Its like Christmas im not going to be able to sleep lol

02-05-2013, 02:11 PM
Hey Phil I was going to tell you lets see if we could get a special deal for 2 whole systems

02-05-2013, 08:04 PM
Congrats! Phill, cant wait to see the pics, I am sure I know how exited you are, that is so cool

02-06-2013, 12:01 PM
hey Phil anxiously waiting on what you think about your new lights. So with the mp40 you just bought does that mean u have 3 of them now?

02-06-2013, 12:24 PM
I hung them last night didn't get done till way late. Ill post pics today.

I like them so far. The lunar cyclr is awesome. There is a pic of last night before I went to bed ill throw up. It had only half the tank lite and its following the current moon cycle.

The only thing I am unhappy with right now is the remote. I paid to get the new wireless controller... You have to have it plugged into a power source. Defeating the wireless idea in my mind... However, I guess its nice because I can move around my house and plug it anywhere and it will send a wireless signal. Still upset with this....

02-06-2013, 12:28 PM
wow that defeats the purpose of wireless but not that bad. What would make it great is there software for the pc? or can u hook it up to the Neptune System?

02-06-2013, 06:43 PM
I took a few photos installing the lights and figured people would like to see them.

Ouchy: Just put to show where I bought from :)

Everything I Got:

Vega's joined together with the EXT rail:

I then lined them up over the tank to where I wanted them to hang:

Bad Picture here but I tied a weight on a string to get the whole on the vega's straight up to the ceiling. ( Lined up correct )

02-06-2013, 06:48 PM
I took one of the gf's containers drilled a hole in it the size I needed to drill into the ceiling. I did this to reduce the amount of debris getting into my tank.

Wall hangers in :

Cut to length:

Controller that is two sided. I love it for its function , I hate it for not being Totally Wireless:

02-06-2013, 06:53 PM
I will have better ones up in time. I just need to get the tank cleaned up and looking better. Also need the time :)

Night time . 12am moon on right side of tank.

Before Vega's on the Anemone:

A shot this afternoon ( 5pm ) of anemone with Vega's.

Found this weird spot in rock work from the way the light gets thru it...

02-06-2013, 07:06 PM
Everything is so much more vivid I love it. Even the xenia looks better lol

I will attach some videos shortly of a lightening storm during the afternoon, one at night, and the light cycle .

Afternoon shot. Sorry for quality.

02-06-2013, 07:45 PM
Cool setup Phil. Nice to see ai have some better mounting bars. Do you want to trade for some old Sol Blues!

02-06-2013, 08:01 PM
I must say I don't :)

I was looking throw my aquanotes from my controller and noticed that my tank temp during 3pm was 1 degree lower then other days. I hope this is how it will be on out as my tank was running 80 plus degrees before. It was at a high of 80.5 today ( 3pm ). I had the lights previously ( MH ) set to turn off if the tank got to 82.5 degrees, which it did this often.

02-06-2013, 08:14 PM
Dusk shot of the clown and its anemone:

02-06-2013, 09:03 PM
Very nice lights....I wish I could do those but unfortunately that is my entire project budget.....I have most of the large items but still need a controller and lights as well as some more in-tank flow....but this is your thread....sorry bout the mini-hijack....

02-06-2013, 09:13 PM
looks great Phil, Congrats!! Let me know if the anenome looses its bubble tips with the lights. The lights look smaller than I thought.

02-06-2013, 09:23 PM
The anemone lost the bubble tips shortly after I got it...

And thanks for the kind words :)

I plan on cleaning up tank and getting better shots if possible. I still haven't figured out how to use my camera correctly to see the true beatuy of the tank. I can look at it it looks amazing but can't get it to come out in pictures....

02-06-2013, 09:42 PM

This is from sunrise to sunset following current florida standard.

02-06-2013, 10:10 PM
Looking very good, nice setup and those lights will make that tank look really nice.

02-06-2013, 10:40 PM
If you look at my foxface in this video you see he is responding to it as being freaked out.

I didn't have enough time to start the program for viewing and start the recording. I say this as there was a decrease in lighing as if clouds had rolled in, before lightening started.

02-06-2013, 11:21 PM
Figured you would like to see the night time lightening storm as well. Our current lunar phase is a crescent thus very low moon light in ocean. This is being mimicked by the controller.

02-11-2013, 07:11 PM
Nice tank, how do you keep the tank free from algae and the sand so clean? My tank is 2 months and I still have lots of algae, multiple kind, not to mention I have 2 reactor with GFO and phosban, and I do 15% every 2 weeks.

02-11-2013, 09:43 PM

Do you stir your sand when you do water changes? this help alot kkeping sand and nutrients in the water colum, consistanly with out the danger of a nitrite spike

02-11-2013, 09:50 PM
I kind of neglected mine so mine did start to collect nutrients ( nitrate ). Reducing now with carbon, and water changes. I throw phosban in a reactor every now and then to.

02-11-2013, 09:58 PM
I am so happy I upgraded my drivers. I went from the Mp40w to the es model. Its so much easier to know they are working correctly. They also have a couple more options.

<a href=http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n49/philip_r5/?action=view&current=20130211_214658_zpsa8a92e21.jpg target=_blank><img src=http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n49/philip_r5/20130211_214658_zpsa8a92e21.jpg border=0 alt=></a>

Have two Mp40w drivers for sale now if anyones interested :)

02-12-2013, 08:12 AM
Phil how are the lights doing?

02-12-2013, 10:08 AM
Excellent. I love the more vivid colors. The light also doesn't spill out into the living room.

02-12-2013, 08:03 PM

02-15-2013, 05:09 PM
Phil I ordered my AI's are you sure you don't have any regrets with them? I can't get the radion's out of my mind. If I open the package on the AI's I wont be able to return them. If I do open them and I don't like them I wonder if I could sell them here to someone for 100 dollars cheaper.

02-17-2013, 06:49 PM
nice phil hows the blue lamp we talked about?

03-10-2013, 12:49 PM
Looking at these it seems as if I was able to take some better pictures with the new LED's . I don't know if it was the ambient lighting or maybe just the new coloration/pigment of the tank.

These are tank shots. I will make another post with overhead shots .

03-10-2013, 12:51 PM
One of my fav's :)

03-10-2013, 05:38 PM
very nice phil

03-10-2013, 10:05 PM
Thanks man. When you going to make it to another meeting? :)

03-10-2013, 10:09 PM
Yes bill I got it hung this weekend. Thanks man.

03-11-2013, 09:14 AM
Ill be there for the next one for sure ;)

04-28-2013, 12:54 PM
Currently battling hair Algae. I may post updates soon.

05-01-2013, 11:27 PM
New addition to tank .

Red sea DesJardini , Sailfin Tang.

Notice the horrible green hair algae...

05-02-2013, 09:02 AM
reallllly nice!! did the foxface not make it? Phil do a 60% water change than setup a gfo reactor for a month and some red hermits

05-02-2013, 10:15 AM
Yea, he passed away. Internal disease. I fogot the name. Ill post it later.

05-02-2013, 11:49 AM
sry to hear that but I like the replacement much better :P

05-02-2013, 02:39 PM
Thanks :)

05-04-2013, 06:03 PM
Took sump out and cleaned it along with the reactors, and skimmer.

Ordered a Coralife Turbo Twist UV Sterilizer.

And I am now going to be more dedicated to my tank then I was in the past. This GHA is going down.

05-06-2013, 07:29 PM
So I think I found the contributor to my gha, my tds. I have been routinely replacing the filters in my ro di. I forgot all about flushing the system everynow and then... The tds was just at 736 ppm... yes twice as bad as tap.... Given that and the new lights BOOM gha....

05-06-2013, 09:31 PM
Im confused. If your changing the filters where was the TDS's at? In the tube leading to the rodi bin? Where did the 736pm read at? After The di resin? For comparison my city non chloramine reads= pre membrane "160's" post membrane "1-2" then again at pre final di "0" and post final di "0" total measured TDS. As soon as pre final resin reads 1 the maxcap extender is dead and gets replaced.

As i understand it, if anything post RO membrane other than 0-10 tds enters di resin or any c02 or chlorine at all, they are ruined in a matter of gallons. There are separate test kits for those parameters but they "in my experience" are not trust worthy. There are pretty detailed instructions for installing a new resin in a max cap in a five stage system, "something leaches off the first di resin that ruins the final resin" for the first 10-20 gallons i think. Your supposed to remove the final resin and install n flush the new max cap "extender type" resin. Then reinstall final resin to get the full 250-1200 gallons out of final resin. This may only be specific to "Spectra Pure" products, but i doubt it, there all the same mostly. Is there anything im missing?

05-07-2013, 08:18 AM
The membrane part, which has the crap water line coming out. It has a valve on it youcan turn to flush it I believe is correct. Mines a 4 stage. I'm going to get an inline tds meter now... Never thought about checking has I frequently changed cartridges. ..

I am assuming there was a build up.

05-08-2013, 07:27 PM
Ready to kill.

very nice good luck Phil let me know how it works out

05-12-2013, 05:05 PM
So, I was debating on showing these or not. I guess I will. This is my current problem. The war has started.

05-12-2013, 05:18 PM
That xenia colony is crazy big! Good luck with your battle Phil!

05-12-2013, 05:46 PM
Good luck Phil. Is your UV sterilizer helping?

05-12-2013, 06:03 PM
Its helping with the algae on the tank glass, but I can't tell you more then that. I am sure it is helping a little with any of the bryopsis or other gha that gets thru the sump. However, there are prefilters that pick up alot before it gets into the sump area its self.

05-12-2013, 06:18 PM
Don't see why would UV help with this. Algae grows because there are nutrients for it to use in the water column. Killing whatever is alive in the water column would just add more nutrients possibly from sources that usually would take it up like phytoplankton and copepods.

Nitrates and phosphates are available to the algae and it does what it's supposed to - it grows. Water changes and pulling out algae matter would export it. Addressing whatever causes the imbalance would fix it to a point. But there is always some of nitrates and phosphates will be available, it just needs to be channeled into something productive if there is an abundance.

One way to make algae work for it is to provide a specific area for it to just grow and make that area more suitable than the display tank.
I have pretty similar looking area in my tank atm as well. Only it is in the sump and there is 0 hair algae in the main tank.

On the other hand my 40b tank has a dark sump, so I'm pretty sure I will be getting some of that algae in the display portion of it. (40b got lights few weeks after 120g did so algae cycle is a bit behind). Sump for that tank is only a 20g so will be a bit difficult to fit some sort of algae farm, but it will have to be done for a cleaner looking display portion.

Finally, the algae refugium area needs to be fairly large and have a fairly strong light and correct light for the algae to that. First part is to make sure the volume of the algae you are growing is big enough to actually soak up all of the nutrients (baseball sized chaeto clump will not be able to eat everything in 200g tank :P ). Second is to make sure algae in the refugium is more successful than the one trying to grow in the display portion of the system, thus starving out rest of the system's algae.

Anyways, hopefully this will be of use to someone working on their tanks and perhaps battling algae issues :)

05-12-2013, 07:10 PM
I bought the UV for a couple reason. I would rather have it grab and destroy the free floating algae before it settles back into the tank in a different/new spot and grows. Also to reduce any chances of parasites, and other pathogens.

05-12-2013, 11:38 PM
Cleaned the power heads today. Man was the algae caked on there.

Also started to raise the Mag. Was at 1280, going to 1700....

I used Hydrogen Peroxide to clean. Just let it soak for about 20-30mins then scrubbed it.

I dont feel qualified because i have not had salt water very long to comment, but im sure you all know "I cant keep my opinion to my self", so I will second what michael said and add in short. CLEAN UP, less food, "little" less light, more gfo, more good rodi water changes, More flow, and try not to change all that the same day to avoid shock to anything. All the cruddies soak in to the sand n rock and release slowly so it will take time to get nutrients out.

05-13-2013, 12:27 PM
Great job with the H2O2 on power heads.

05-13-2013, 07:32 PM
Tank chemistry log:

PH 8.92
Nitrate 0 ppm
Calcium 420ppm
Alk/Dkh 9dkh
SG 1.025
Temp 82.4
Phosphate 0ppm
MG 1200
NH3 Ammonia 0ppm
Orp 296

Im hoping the PH is so high because of the water changes, sump cleaning, and new bio balls. I don't know if it could also be effected by the ALK additions I have been doing more then normal of as well.

05-13-2013, 07:35 PM
like the idea of bioballs, but I am also a big fan of Vodka dosing
I would not be concern about the PH, since most of the big 3 are in range
definenetly I will rise Mag to a 1350

Sent from my iPhone because I am not home with my fishes

05-13-2013, 07:56 PM
I guess this part of a article may explain it "Nearly all high pH situations encountered in reef aquaria are caused by a carbon dioxide deficiency."

All that macro algae eating up the CO2 and releasing O.

The more common way for reef aquaria to attain excessive pH is through high pH additives, most notably the use of alkalinity additives that contain hydroxide (limewater (http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-01/rhf/index.htm)) or carbonate (some two part additives, for example).

This was taken from : http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-03/rhf/index.htm

05-14-2013, 08:13 AM
Maybe give the ph probe a good cleaning if you using one in tank to read ph instead of a separate test. Those things get cruddy and read funny sometimes. If there is hair algae on that it will read all wacky.

05-14-2013, 06:20 PM
True. I do use probes.

05-19-2013, 05:26 PM
After a few things.

<a href="http://s109.photobucket.com/user/philip_r5/media/Fish%20Tank/DSCF2782_zpsf0aee937.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n49/philip_r5/Fish%20Tank/DSCF2782_zpsf0aee937.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSCF2782_zpsf0aee937.jpg"/></a>

05-19-2013, 10:25 PM
MUCH better!

well done

05-19-2013, 10:42 PM
Looks great! What did you do?

05-20-2013, 09:41 AM
nice Job Phil

05-20-2013, 03:31 PM
Glad to see your tank is doing better :)

05-20-2013, 08:46 PM
I took a weedeater to it :p

I started with raising the Mag. Its currently at 1500. Then went in and started pulling it out, while using a siphon right next to my fingers to pull out as much of the floaters as possible. Then I took a filter sock put it at the end of the siphon tube and went in with a brush and started bunching the crap out of the rock while siphoning right next to it. I also added my bio balls back to the sump, and cleaned all the equipment good.

05-20-2013, 09:19 PM
Great news! I thought you might have resorted to ROWA phos.

05-20-2013, 09:49 PM
Well I do have two reactors. One with Oceans Blend Phosphate Remover and another for Activated Carbon.

05-20-2013, 09:52 PM
I also forgot to mention that I cleaned out my Ro/DI as well. I didn't do the routine purging and it apparently clogged up with the bad crap. This may have been one of the leading causes of the problem.

05-20-2013, 10:01 PM

05-20-2013, 11:35 PM
nice job, your not messing around eh

05-21-2013, 08:05 AM
Philip, looks like your so good at this you got the wall under the sump to grow purple Coraline algae also! Tank looks great now i guess you just have to take the time n go thru it real good sometimes. I hope ultimately you enjoyed tinkering with the system. Thats whats its about.

05-21-2013, 10:10 AM
lol ty jim

08-01-2013, 10:47 PM
Took tank apart today. May become a fish only now.

Everything will be moved to 125 once it cycles.

10-13-2013, 01:02 AM
Night shot my tank!

10-14-2013, 10:33 AM
hey phil the tank looks sweeet

10-14-2013, 02:40 PM
Thanks. I've kinda been neglecting it. Getting ready to set up the 125 in wall. Figuring everything out. I ordered the tank. Now to remove the old one and get everything ready.

10-15-2013, 08:05 AM
gl with it im still in the process of setting my new tank up. The good news is i finally filled it up with water 3 days ago

11-11-2013, 08:10 PM
Wow nice. Very cool. Fun to see the clowns in the gbta

02-25-2014, 03:48 PM
I will be taking the tank down shortly to put the livestock into my 125. This is the last FTS.

Thanks for viewing this thread. I hope you like the upcoming thread of my In wall 125.
